Saving Money on a Car Rental

I recently went to rent a vehicle and my brother-in-law (he use to be in the car rental business) told me not to get the car rental insurance because my own car insurance should cover my rental.  I had not heard about this before and I called my car insurance company to verify this info and they told me Yes - that the car rental would be covered under my current policy (same deductible, coverage).  I rented the car for a week and saved approx. $42.  The cheapest Auto rental is Dollar Rent A Car
